Carburettors were common on cars built prior to the mid 1980s. One or more carburettors would have the sole purpose of mixing fuel and air going into the engine of a car. The settings are determined manually by a trained mechanic. For decades, fuel injection and then electronic fuel injection systems were gradually introduced as a luxury to many cars, and now all modern cars have electronic fuel injection systems. The fuel mixture is measured much more accurately than with a carburettor, and the systems allow variable control of fuel mixtures depending on the demands of the driving situation. A car travelling up hill, slowly, on a hot day might trip the injection system to boost extra fuel delivered to the engine. This would result in keeping the engine slightly cooler on the hot day. This control is monitored and delivered by way of the engine management computer, electronically to the electronic fuel injection system.
These electronic fuel injection systems are quite complex. Measuring sensors, fuel pumps, fuel lines, hoses, gaskets, mountings, fasteners, fuel filters and injectors are just a few of the components that make up a modern fuel injection system.
